Who we are?
TATUCA was founded in August 1962, by the “UN Boys” at the same time Trinidad and gained its Independence from Great Britain. The idea then and still is to show case this newly independent multicultural twin-island state and its culture to the people of our adopted homeland. They thought that one of the best ways to do that was to initiate the T&T Annual Independence Ball. The first ball, held in August 1962 took place at the Manhattan Center, 34th Street, New York City. It was also a tremendous opportunity for Trinidad and Tobago nationals residing in New York to come together and celebrate that very important achievement. In the 1970s, TATUCA took a number of initiatives which have become common practice, such as honoring its nationals at the Annual Independence Ball. It was the first Trinidad and Tobago organization to hire a Trinidad and Tobago based orchestra to play at a function in New York. During this time TATUCA organized chartered flights to Trinidad and Tobago’s carnival. TATUCA has been, for the past 52 years, at the forefront of the Trinidad and Tobago community in New York. It has since 1986 introduced a scholarship award program with the goal of providing financial assistance to young adults attending college. TATUCA believes that a good education is key to being a successful future and responsible citizen. It has also made some charitable donations to charitable organizations in Trinidad and Tobago. In support of these goals TATUCA has undertaken and accomplished the following:
TATUCA has been honored by the Trinidad and Tobago Alliance and have received the award for community service. Additionally, its members Cameron Wiltshire, Dolores Walters (deceased), Jackie Phillips, Alethea St. Bernard Marshall and Berold Hinds have all been recognized for their dedication to community service. In 2010, Marty Markowitz, Brooklyn Borough President presented TATUCA with a Proclamation for Outstanding Community Leadership. Its current president Alethea St. Bernard Marshall also received an award from Assemblyman Nick Perry for Community Service that same year. FOUNDING MEMBERS WERE ALL EMPLOYEES AT THE UNITED NATIONS & WERE ALL FORMER MEMBERS OF TRINIDAD &TOBAGO POLICE SERVICE EXCEPT FOR ONE. (SEE LIST BELOW):
